The Ice Cream Review may not be the best beach read, but be glad the experts kept their knowledge frosty and that HathiTrust Digital Library keeps the title on ice in the repository to preserve confectioners’ secrets. The American Printer, another trade journal, teases apart the intricacies of ink and press, letter by letter. The journal operated under various monikers for nearly 130 years before its final run in 2011.

The Conchological Illustrations by George Brettingham Sowerby comes to us from the University of Michigan Museums and Herbarium Library collection digitized under a CLIR Digitizing Hidden Collections grant. About 88% of the digitized volumes are in the public domain and many — such as this volume — have beautiful illustrations that can be viewed in full-color high resolution.

In addition to the global north’s summer tropes, we recognize a milestone event in U.S. civil rights history. In July 1917, 10,000 people of largely African American descent came together to quietly, but powerfully, march down New York’s Fifth Avenue to protest racial violence against Blacks, particularly that which had occurred in St. Louis earlier in the month. The Silent Protest Parade, organized by the newly-formed NAACP, set the stage for future civil rights demonstrations. Poet Carrie Williams Clifford memorializes the parade and other moments and leaders in Black history in her 1922 volume of poems, The Widening Light.
