In 2023, the University of California libraries launched a landmark research project to investigate the potential for expanded lawful use of digitized books held by academic and research libraries. The project included a rigorous user needs assessment, exploring potential use cases that would support research and teaching across higher education. In this webinar, we will share in-depth findings from our expansive user research, which included 36 focus groups of users from colleges and universities throughout the United States. We will also provide a high-level discussion of legal and technical considerations based on our environmental scan and analysis.

About Project LEND

Project LEND (Library Expansion of Networked Delivery) is a two-year project supported by a $1.1 million grant from the Mellon Foundation. The project seeks to advance a national conversation about use of digitized books by deepening our understanding of how faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, and others would ideally like to use digital books to advance their research and education.

The research project is led by the UC libraries in partnership with faculty and postdoctoral researchers at the University of California, senior personnel from the HathiTrust Digital Library, and an expert in ebook user experience from the Digital Public Library of America.
